– Ontario Premier Doug Ford told reporters at Queen’s Park on Wednesday that if United States President-elect Donald Trump followed through on imposing tariffs on Canadian imports, the province will cut off energy to the U.S. Ontario is a major exporter of electricity to Michigan, Wisconsin and New York state, powering 1.5 million U.S. homes in 2023. Ford added that retaliatory tariffs were discussed in an online meeting between Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and provincial premiers on Wednesday.

– The Canadian Union of Postal Workers reached a mediated settlement with Canada Post on Wednesday with regards to an unfair labour practice complaint. On Nov. 29, CUPW filed a complaint with the Canada Industrial Relations Board after 328 workers received temporary layoff notices, which the union claimed was a violation of the Canada Labour Code. Despite denying any violation, Canada Post will rescind those layoff notices.
– South Korea president Yoon Suk Yeol went on television on Thursday to defend his decision to impose martial law on Dec. 3, calling the opposition Democratic Party a “monster” and “anti-state forces”. He added his martial law decree was an act of governance that cannot be subject to investigation. The Democratic Party and other opposition parties will make a second attempt to impeach Yoon through a vote this weekend.
– Empire Co. Ltd., the parent company of the Sobey’s grocery chain, said it earned a profit of C$173.4 million in the second quarter of 2024, compared to a Q1 profit of C$207.8 million. Sales totaled C$7.78 billion in Q2, C$30 million more than the same quarter last year.
