Global Markets: Germany shifts to the right and further

  • Germans voted for change on Sunday, with the Christian Democratic Union/Christian Social Union winning the largest bloc of seats in the Bundestag with 208. That means CDU/CSU leader, Friedrich Merz will need to form a governing coalition, one made more difficult as the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) placed second with 152 seats. Merz suggested he’s not willing to work with the AfD, stating “they’re happy if the problems get worse and worse.” As well, Merz criticized the Trump administration for meddling in the election.

  • Russia attacked Ukraine during the early hours of Sunday with nearly 270 drones – on the eve of the third anniversary of its invasion of it neighbour. Officials in Kyiv claimed up to 140 drones were downed and about 120 disappeared after being electronically jammed. Ukraine’s fate was thrown into chaos recently as United States President Donald Trump blamed the country for the war and excluded them from peace talks with Russia.

 

  • Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and 12 European leaders arrived in Kyiv on Monday for Ukraine’s peace and security conference, just as the Russian invasion entered its fourth year. Trudeau pledged C$5 billion in aid along with 25 light armoured vehicles, two armoured combat support vehicles and assistance to help maintain Ukraine’s power grid. “This is not a conflict Ukraine wanted, provoked or asked for in any way,” Trudeau stated in a rebuke to Trump.

 

  • Pope Francis remained in critical condition in a Rome hospital on Monday, as he battles double pneumonia and signs of mild kidney failure, according to reports. The 88-year-old pontiff suffered a severe respiratory crisis during the weekend. Doctors at the Gemelli hospital warned the Pope’s pneumonia could lead to sepsis.
