Global Markets: Greenland not for sale

WINNIPEG, Aug. 16 (MarketsFarm) – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

– Reports that United States President Donald Trump has expressed an interest in purchasing Greenland are being dismissed as a terrible idea by residents of the largely autonomous Danish country. “We are open for business, but we’re not for sale,” said Greenland’s foreign minister Ane Lone Bagger.

– Israel is backtracking on a move to ban U.S. congresswoman Rashida Tlaib from visiting the country. While Tlaib and fellow congresswoman Ilhan Omar were barred from making an official visit due to their criticism of Israel and pro-Palestinian stance, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Tlaib may be able to visit family in the West Bank on humanitarian grounds if she promises not to promote a boycott against Israel.

– Foreign investors reduced their holdings in Canadian securities by C$4.0 billion in June, according to a report from Statistics Canada. The reduction came following a net C$10.3 billion investment the previous month. Meanwhile, Canadians increased their holdings in foreign securities by C$6.6 billion in June.
