WINNIPEG, Dec. 8 (MarketsFarm) – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

 

  • United States basketball star Brittney Griner was released from a Russian penal colony on Thursday, in exchange for notorious arms dealer Viktor Bout. Griner was arrested at a Moscow airport in February for possession of cannabis. Bout was in this 12th year of a 25-year prison sentence in the U.S. However, U.S. President Joe Biden was unable to secure the release of Paul Whelan, the Canadian-born U.S. citizen who was convicted of spying by a Russian court four years ago.

  • The price of West Texas Intermediate crude oil prices shot up Thursday by almost five per cent after a leak in the Keystone pipeline was discovered. A report said spillage was found in a creek about 32 kilometres south of Steele City, Neb. The 4,300-kilometer pipeline running from Alberta to refineries in Illinois, Oklahoma and Texas can move up to 610,000 barrels of crude per day.

 

  • Chinese President Xi Jinping continued his state visit to Saudi Arabia on Thursday. During the three-day visit that began Wednesday, Chinese and Saudi officials are to sign trade agreements amounting to US$29.6 billion. Saudi Arabia has been in the process of diversifying its economy and China is already its largest customer. Xi’s visit also came at a low point for Saudi-U.S. relations.
