Global Markets: Hamas/Israel truce holding in Gaza

WINNIPEG, Nov. 24 (MarketsFarm) – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

  • A four-day ceasefire between Hamas and Israel began Friday, with no reports of fighting so far as the pause allows humanitarian aid efforts in Gaza. A prisoner exchange is expected to include 13 Israelis held hostage by Hamas and 39 Palestinian prisoners. More hostage releases are expected if the truce holds.

 

  • Retail sales in Canada were up by 0.6 per cent in September hitting C$66.5 billion, according to a report from Statistics Canada. Sales were up in four of nine subsectors, with increases in motor vehicles and parts dealers seeing the largest rise at 1.5 per cent. Core retail sales, which excludes that sector and gasoline stations, were down by 0.3 per cent.

  • Riots erupted in Dublin, Ireland overnight with 34 people arrested after windows were smashed and fires set to police cars and other vehicles. The violence was reportedly sparked after far-right anti-immigrant protesters arrived at the scene of the stabbing of three young children. The initial motive for the stabbing remains unclear, with one five-year-old girl still in critical condition.
