– After a contentious debate, the House of Commons approved a motion by the Trudeau government to allow extraordinary measures within The Emergencies Act, which was invoked last week to end truck blockades at border crossings and in Ottawa. The vote passed 185-151 on Monday evening with the Liberals and New Democrats voting yes. However, the latter warned they would withdraw support when they deem the measures to be no longer necessary. The Senate has yet to vote on the motion, which would revoke the government’s powers to use The Act should the Upper Chamber vote against it.

– Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered forces into the Donetsk and Luhansk regions of Eastern Ukraine on Monday after recognizing both regions as independent. After the meeting, the United Kingdom announced it was implementing sanctions on Russian banks while Germany has pulled the certification process of the Nord Stream 2 natural gas pipeline which transports Russian gas to parts of Europe.
– Multiple explosions near a gold mine in Burkina Faso killed 59 people and injured more than 100 on Monday. The blast, which occurred near the village of Gbomblora in the southwestern part of the country, was believed to have been caused by a chemical reaction.
