WINNIPEG, Sept. 29 (MarketsFarm) – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

– Hurricane Ian arrived over Florida on Wednesday afternoon and quickly caused widespread damage with winds clocked at about 240 kilometres per hour. Governor Ron DeSantis stated that Ian was a one in 500-year hurricane for central Florida. Now downgraded to a tropical storm from a category four hurricane, Ian has left approximately 2.5 million people in Florida without power and a number of cities are flooded.

– Statistics Canada (StatCan) reported on Thursday that the country’s real gross domestic product inched up 0.1 per cent in July, matching the same economic growth in June. Ahead of the report, analysts called for a slight contraction. StatCan said there was a 0.5 per cent increase in goods-producing industries, but a decrease of 0.1 per cent in the services-producing industries. As for August, the federal agency’s preliminary estimate suggested the GDP would be unchanged.

– Just as Russia announced on Thursday it will formerly annex parts of Ukraine on Friday, Sweden said there is a new, mysterious leak in the Nord Stream pipelines. Earlier this week, Denmark detected two explosions and leaks shortly after. While Nord Stream 1 and 2, which run under the Baltics Sea, haven’t been transporting gas from Russia to Germany since August, gas has remained inside the pipelines. The European Union accused Russia of sabotaging the pipelines, which Russian officials deny.
