– Israel and Hamas agreed to an extension of a temporary ceasefire on Monday, adding two more days to their truce. During that time so far, Hamas has released 50 Israeli women and children, while Israel turned over 150 security detainees, all women and teenagers. Israel plans on releasing 300 detainees and said that the ceasefire could be extended by one day for every 10 hostages released by Hamas.
– Air Transat flight attendants voted near-unanimously to strike as soon as Jan. 3, 2024 if a new contract can’t be reached. Air Transat’s current labour deal expired in October 2022 and both sides have been in negotiations since April with compensation as the major issue. If a deal is not reached, 2,100 workers represented by the Canadian Union of Public Employees will walk off the job.

– Panama’s Supreme Court ruled on Tuesday that a 20-year concession given to Canadian mining company First Quantum Minerals was unconstitutional. In March, Panama’s legislature reached an agreement with First Quantum to allow its Panamanian subsidiary Minera Panama to continue operating an open-pit copper mine for another 20 years. Opponents to the deal feared that the mine would damage a forested coastal area and threaten water supplies. The mine employs thousands and accounts for three per cent of Panama’s GDP.
– On Monday, the United Kingdom’s Health Security Agency confirmed the first documented case of a distinct form of swine flu in a human. Officials said that the person experienced a mild form of illness and fully recovered, but they have not yet found the source of the infection. The agency will trace close contacts of the individual and will increase surveillance at hospitals in parts of northern England.
