- The four contenders to succeed Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as leader of the Liberal Party met Tuesday in the leadership race’s English language debate. The frontrunners, former deputy prime minister Chrystia Freeland positioned herself as the best candidate to take on United States President Donald Trump, and former Bank of Canada governor Mark Carney distanced himself from Trudeau. Karina Gould and Frank Baylis are the other candidates. The debate was the last one before Liberals select their next leader on March 9.

- The U.S. and Ukraine reached a deal regarding the latter’s critical minerals on Tuesday. The move is seen as a means to reach an overall peace agreement with Russia, which invaded Ukraine three years ago. Recently, Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin met to discuss means to end the war, shutting out their Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The minerals deal is being viewed as Zelenskyy attempting to gain favour with Trump.
- Global markets were mostly higher on Wednesday, ahead of Nvidia’s quarterly report. The technology intelligence giant has been challenged by the emergence of DeepSeek, which has seen Nvidia’s shares trade sideways over the last few months. While Nvidia focusses on producing more expensive technology, China-based DeepSeek opted for cheaper computer chips that require less power.
- Andrew Fury became the second Canadian premier to resign within a week. Fury, the Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador for the last four and a half years, called a surprise news conference on Tuesday at which he announced he’s stepping down, stating he couldn’t commit to another term. A provincial election is set for this fall. Dennis King resigned as the Premier of Prince Edward Island on Feb. 20.
