Global Markets: Melissa nears Jamaica, set to strike

  • Hurricane Melissa will slam into Jamaica on Tuesday, as the Category 5 storm is set to be the strongest to strike the Caribbean island country in 174 years. The Jamaican government said it has done all it can to prepare for Melissa. The hurricane’s powerful winds are to create storm surges of up to four metres, with its heavy rains to cause flash flooding and landslides. Melissa is expected to strike Cuba next.

  • The British Columbia government said on Monday it will launch its anti-tariff advertising campaign next month, focusing on the province’s softwood lumber industry. B.C. Premier David Eby said it’s crucial to say “this kind of (tariff) nonsense and absurdity need to be brought to the attention of the American people and the decision-makers.” Eby also said B.C.’s ads are different than those ran by Ontario, but he fully supports that province’s ad campaign.
  • United States President Donald Trump will replace Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell in 2026, CNN reported on Tuesday. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said he interviewed about a dozen candidates around Labour Day, narrowing down the choice to five people. The candidates include top officials from within the Fed, the private sector and the White House. Powell is scheduled to announce the Fed’s next interest rate move on Wednesday.  
  • The U.S. and Mexico extended their deadline for a trade deal from Nov. 1 by a few more weeks, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said on Monday. In July, Trump agreed to postpone increasing tariffs on U.S. imports from Mexico from 25 to 30 per cent. Sheinbaum declined to say on how this will affect Mexico’s trade relations with Canada, stating “let’s not get ahead of ourselves.”
