– A Michigan state judge declared on Thursday that the dispute between Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer and Enbridge Inc.’s Line 5 cross-border oil and gas pipeline should be settled in federal court, siding with the latter. Since December 2020, Whitmer has been trying to block the construction of the pipeline, which she fears would cause an environmental catastrophe in the Straits of Mackinac between the state’s Upper and Lower Peninsulas. Last November, the judge sided with Enbridge, which forced Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel to abandon the original case and create a new case through a near-identical circuit court.

– An interim ban on handgun imports in Canada comes into effect on Friday. The move was announced earlier this month in an effort to cap the number of handguns in the country. In May, the federal government announced it will implement a plan to freeze the importing, selling and transfer of handguns. The new regulations are expected to be voted on this fall.
– Chinese-born Canadian tycoon Xiao Jianhua was sentenced on Friday to 13 years in a Chinese prison for a string of financial offences totalling billions of dollars, while his company Tomorrow Group was fined C$10.5 billion. He was accused of misusing billions of dollars in deposits from banks and insurers controlled by his company while offering bribes to officials. Xiao was last seen at a Hong Kong hotel in Jan. 2017 before being taken by Chinese authorities.
– The Dieppe Gardens in Windsor, Ont. will host a national ceremony on Friday honouring the Canadian soldiers who lost their lives in the raid at Dieppe, France during the Second World War 80 years ago. The majority of troops in the assault were Canadian and 916 soldiers died in the battle.
