  • Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is set to meet online with the country’s provincial premiers on Wednesday. The virtual conference late this afternoon will focus on the sharp tariffs United States President-elect Donald Trump said he will impose on his first day of office on Jan. 20. Reports said the 25 per cent levies on Canadian goods imported by the U.S. could push the Canadian economy into a recession.

  • The 60-day ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah continued into its second day on Wednesday, as their respective military forces withdrew from southern Lebanon. The Lebanese army and United Nations peacekeeping forces will patrol the region. Calls have now shifted to a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.

 

  • Proceedings in India’s lower house of parliament were suspended on Wednesday for the second time this week as lawmakers pressed their demands to discuss the growing scandal surrounding the Adani Group. Last week, U.S. authorities accused company founder Gautam Adani of being part of a US$265 million bribery scheme. The opposition Congress Party has accused government of protecting Adani.

 

  • Statistics Canada reported on Wednesday that spending by all governments in the country – federal, provincial, local, and other government entities – was a record C$1.08 trillion in 2023. That’s up by more than 10 per cent in 2022 and surpassed the previous record of C$1.05 trillion set in 2020.
