WINNIPEG, Sept. 23 – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

– Russian-held regions of Ukraine began voting in referendums on Friday over officially joining Russia. The referendums have been largely denounced as shams with no legal backing by Ukraine and its allies. The referendums are happening as UN human rights investigators present evidence of war crimes committed in the conflict regions.

– Hurricane Fiona is bearing down on Newfoundland with forecasts calling it for it to be one of the most powerful to ever make landfall in Canada. Heavy rains, large waves, and winds have the potential to cause massive destruction, with officials warning of extended power outages. The storm has already devasted Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic.

– Anti-government protests in Iran were being met by state-organized demonstrations in several cities as unrest in the country escalates following the death of woman in police custody.
