– Statistics Canada reported this morning that retail sales increased 2.5 per cent to C$69.6 billion in December. One of the main drivers was food and beverage retailers, whose sales were up 3.5 per cent during the month. Sales at motor vehicle and parts dealers rose 1.9 per cent in December. However, StatCan’s preliminary estimate for January called for a 0.4 per cent decline.
– A federal judge in Washington, D.C. gave the go-ahead on Thursday for United States President Donald Trump to resume mass firings of federal workers. U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper, appointed by former President Barack Obama, said he could not grant a temporary motion from unions to halt the layoffs, adding that their complaint was an employment dispute and needed to undergo another process. More than 80 lawsuits have been filed to challenge Trump’s numerous executive orders after taking office last month.

– Connor McDavid scored the overtime winner as Canada’s national men’s hockey team defeated the U.S. 3-2 in the final of the inaugural 4 Nations Face-Off tournament in Boston on Thursday. The Canadian victory was payback for a chippy 3-1 American win in Montreal on Feb. 15. Canadian forward Nathan McKinnon was named the tournament’s most valuable player. The rivalry between the two nations was heightened when Canadian fans booed The Star Spangled Banner in response to Trump’s ‘51st state’ musings, with American fans responding in kind to O Canada. The event was designed to be a prelude to the men’s Olympic hockey tournament in Italy next year.
