– Russian forces are moving westward while firing artillery at suburbs near the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv on Monday. Russian forces had struck the towns of Brovary, Irpin, Bucha and Hostomel, all near Kyiv, as well as the cities of Chernihiv, Mykolaiv and Kharkiv. The port city of Mariupol, which has seen some of the worst fighting in the conflict, remains cut off. On the weekend, a military base only 20 kilometres from the Poland/Ukraine border was also struck, the closest the conflict has come to reaching NATO territory. Russian and Ukrainian representatives will talk via video conference on Monday and will focus on getting aid to and creating evacuation routes for affected citizens.

– Aides from the United States and China will meet in Rome on Monday, with the U.S. warning that it will not tolerate China helping Russia evade sanctions brought on by the latter’s invasion of Ukraine. U.S. officials have also accused China of spreading misinformation that Ukraine is creating chemical weapons, which may be used as a pretext for Russia to attack. However, with its support of Russia, China has alienated its two largest trading partners: the U.S. and the European Union.
– Unifor president Jerry Dias, who leads Canada’s largest private-sector union, announced his retirement on Sunday due to ongoing health issues. Dias, a former aerospace worker, had been the union’s only president since it was created in 2013. The board will determine the next steps for leadership in the coming days.
