– After two months of fighting, Russian forces have finally gained control of Ukraine’s Luhansk province on Sunday after capturing the city of Lysychansk. Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated his country’s military on their victory, but many observers believe it has come at a great cost to the Russian front lines and that Ukrainian forces may now have an easier time defending their territory going forward. Luhansk governor Serhiy Gaidai said to Reuters, “We need to win the war, not the battle for Lysychansk… It hurts a lot, but it’s not losing the war.”

– Three people were killed and 30 were injured when a gunman opened fire in a shopping mall in Copenhagen on Sunday. The three killed were a boy and a girl, both 17 years of age, and a 47-year-old Russian man, according to Danish police. The gunman, a 22-year-old Danish man, acted alone, selected his victims at random, and was known to mental health services, according to police.
– More than 30,000 people residing in and around Sydney, Australia have already evacuated or are preparing to do so on Monday after the fourth round of flooding in a year and a half. Days of ongoing rain caused dams to overflow and waterways to break their banks. Some areas around Sydney had received 1.5 metres of rain, near the average annual rainfall, in a 24-hour span.
– New COVID-19 cases in the United Kingdom have spiked by more than 30 per cent in the last week, new data showed Friday, largely due to the BA.4 and BA.5 Omicron subvariants. Three million people contracted the virus over the past week, but hospitalizations did not rise accordingly and the number of deaths fell slightly. A few days before, the World Health Organization said that COVID-19 cases were rising in more than 100 countries and French officials have recommended the wearing of masks on public transportation.
