WINNIPEG – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

– Russian forces have now shifted most of their focus on the Donbas region in eastern Ukraine with assaults beginning Monday along a 480-kilometre long front. Russian soldiers who retreated from the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv have since regrouped in preparation for a major assault on Donbas, which had seen fighting since 2014 from Russia-backed separatists. Russia claims it hit 1,260 Ukrainian military facilities and 1,214 troop concentrations over a 24-hour span, but the numbers have not been independently verified. United States President Joe Biden will hold a call with allies on Tuesday to discuss the crisis.

– Explosions at educational facilities in a Shia Muslim neighbourhood in Kabul killed at least six people and injured 11, including students, on Tuesday. The blasts took place inside a high school and another education centre a few kilometres away. Private guards in the area said it appeared a suicide bomber triggered the explosions.

– A federal judge in Florida struck down a national mask mandate on airplanes and mass transit on Monday, forcing airlines and airports to either enforce their own mandates or to have none at all. Many passengers inside flights entering and leaving the United States cheered the news when it was announced mid-flight.
