Global Markets: Russia ramps up drone/missile attacks

WINNIPEG, Oct. 13 – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

– Russia continued to bombard Ukrainian cities, including Kyiv, with missile and drone attacks on Thursday, with numerous civilian targets hit. Iranian-made ‘kamikaze drones’ were reportedly used in some of the attacks, although Iran denies supplying the weaponry. Ukraine’s NATO-member western allies have agreed to supply the embattled country with weapons and air defence systems after a meeting this week.

– Consumer prices in the United States were up by 0.4 per cent in September after rising 0.1 per cent the previous month, according to a report from the U.S. Labor Department. The increase in the CPI beat expectations, with annual inflation pegged at 8.2 per cent.

– Conspiracy theorist Alex Jones has been ordered to pay US$965 million in damages after falsely claiming the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting was a hoax. The Infowars host repeatedly claimed on his program that the massacre, that left 20 children and six adults dead, was staged and called parents of the victims ‘crisis actors.’ He has now acknowledged the attack was real.
