WINNIPEG, Jan. 14 (CNS Canada) – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.
– Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau shuffled his cabinet Monday morning following Treasury Board President Scott Brison’s announcement on Friday he was leaving politics. Trudeau moved Minister of Indigenous Affairs Jane Philpott to the Treasury Board and named Veterans Affairs Minister Seamus O’Regan to succeed Philpott at Indigenous Affairs. Also Trudeau appointed Justice Minister Jody Wilson-Raybould as the new Veterans Affairs minister and David Lametti, a parliamentary secretary, has been promoted to take over at justice. No other ministers were affected by the shuffle.

– Following a retrial by Chinese courts, Canadian Robert Schellenberg has been sentenced to be executed. Arrested by Chinese authorities in 2014 for drug smuggling and convicted in November, Schellenberg has been serving a 15-year prison sentence. The Chinese courts said his original sentence was too lenient. It is not known if Schellenberg’s death sentence is in connection with Huawei Chief Financial Officer Meng Wanzhou arrest in Canada.
– The United States government has entered its 24th day of the partial shutdown. Talks between U.S. President Donald Trump and congressional Democrats are scheduled for Monday in hopes of making progress in their impasse that has put approximately 800,000 federal employees out of work. Trump continues to demand US$5 billion for a wall along the U.S./Mexican border and Democrats, who control the House of Representatives, oppose the wall.
