- Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Monday that an independent special rapporteur will be appointed to look into allegations that China meddled in Canada’s 2019 and 2021 federal elections. With the rapporteur yet to be named, Trudeau stated they would have a wide mandate to make recommendations about combatting outside interference in elections. However, the Conservative and New Democratic Parties demanded a full, independent inquiry into the matter. The NDP threatened to pull its support for Trudeau’s minority Liberal government should there not be a full inquiry. Meanwhile, China continued to deny any attempts to meddle in Canadian elections, contrary to intelligence reports.

- In the sixth day of strikes throughout France, most trains stopped running, along with halts to garbage collection and fuel deliveries, as protests against pension reform mounted on Tuesday. Organized labour has planned more than 300 strikes as they build pressure against President Emmanuel Macron’s plan to raise the minimum retirement age to 64 years. Macron asserted his increase from 62 years is needed to combat France’s growing deficit, while the unions say the president has given corporations too many tax breaks.
- China’s new foreign minister, Qin Gang, had strong words for the United States on Tuesday, warning the latter that war between the two countries is very possible. “If the United States does not hit the brakes, but continues to speed down the wrong path, no amount of guardrails can prevent derailing, and there will surely be conflict and confrontation,” Qin stated. China and the U.S. are at loggerheads over the independence of Taiwan, China’s growing ties with Russia, as well as President Xi Jinping’s aggressive push to assert China as a superpower.
