Global Markets: Trump becomes President today

May order import tariffs to be studied first

  • Donald Trump will be sworn in as the 47th President of the United States on Monday at 11 am CST. Previously the 45th president, Trump’s inauguration will mark the second time a U.S. president will serve non-consecutive terms since Grover Cleveland was the 22nd and 24th There’s a great deal of uncertainty as Trump previously threatened to impose 25 per cent tariffs on all U.S. imports from Canada and Mexico, as well as an extra 10 per cent on imports from China, as early as today. However, a report said Trump may instead order federal agencies to study the tariffs and their effects.

  • The federal Liberal leadership race picked up steam over the weekend as former Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland and Government House Leader Karina Gould formally announced their respective candidacies. Freeland has joined former Bank of Canada and Bank of England Governor Mark Carney as the frontrunners. Foreign Minister Melanie Joly publicly endorsed Carney on Sunday, while Health Minister Mark Holland and Fisheries Minister Diane Lebouthillier said they’re backing Freeland.

 

  • In the Middle East, Hamas released three Israeli hostages and Israel freed 90 Palestinian prisoners on Sunday, the first day of their ceasefire. Over the next six weeks, 100 Israeli hostages are to be returned in exchange for 2,000 Palestinian prisoners. The 15-month-old war in Gaza has reportedly killed more than 47,000 Palestinians and about 400 Israeli soldiers. The Israeli invasion of Gaza came after Hamas militants launched a brutal attack in October 2023 that killed 1,200 Israelis and took 250 hostages.

 

  • Social media app TikTok was made available again in the U.S. on Sunday, with incoming president Donald Trump getting the credit for it. TikTok shut itself down in the U.S. on Saturday after the Supreme Court upheld the legislation to ban it. Trump said he will extend the pre-ban period before it’s enacted, providing more time for U.S. buyers to come forward. The China-based app was banned on the basis of national security issues.
