Global Markets: Trump indicted by feds

WINNIPEG – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

– Former United States President Donald Trump said on social media Thursday that he is being indicted on federal charges relating to his mishandling of classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago estate. Two people familiar with the situation confirmed to the Associated Press that Trump will face seven charges and his attorney James Trusty told CNN on Thursday night that the indictment includes charges of willful retention of national defence information, obstruction, false statements and conspiracy. Trump had already been indicted in New York state last March and he is also currently under criminal investigation in Washington, D.C. and Atlanta, Ga.

– Canada’s jobless rate grew to 5.2 per cent in May, marking the first increase since last August, according to data released by Statistics Canada earlier today. The economy lost a total of 17,000 jobs with fewer people working in business, building and support services. Meanwhile, employment rose in manufacturing and utilities. Wages were also 5.1 per cent higher in May compared to one year ago.

– A Canadian Federal Court judge has found Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) guilty of contempt of court on Thursday for employees working excessively long hours. The rail operator, formerly known as Canadian Pacific, failed to comply with 22 cease-and-desist orders issued by an arbitrator over a 10-month period in 2018 and 2019. Judge Ann Marie McDonald wrote in her decision that there were “thousands of instances” where employees were not off after 10 hours. CPKC said it will appeal the ruling.
