- A bipartisan deal to avert a government shut down in the United States was effectively stopped by President-elect Donald Trump, as he said any Republicans in Congress who voted on the bill would face primary challenges in the 2026 midterm elections. Lawmakers have until midnight Friday to reach a compromise, or funding will be interrupted for many government services.
- Invasive “murder hornets” have been eradicated from the U.S., five years after first being spotted in the country, the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced Wednesday. The world’s largest hornet, also called Asian giant hornets, are known for their dangerous sting and can decimate a honeybee hive in hours. The hornets were first discovered in North America in British Columbia in 2019 but have not been detected in Canada since 2021.

- A politician in the Russian-backed Georgian region of Abkhazia was shot dead inside the parliament building on Thursday, with another lawmaker wounded. The state news agency reported that Deputy Vakhtang Golandzia died from the shooting, with another politician said to be the primary suspect. No immediate motive was given, although Abkhazia saw protestors opposed to an investment agreement with Russia storm the parliament last month.
