Global Markets: Trump threatens to absorb Canada into U.S.

– United States president-elect Donald Trump said in a press conference on Tuesday he is willing to use “economic force” to have Canada become part of the U.S. He added the U.S. is not obligated to support Canada’s economy nor does the country need Canadian goods such as lumber, automobiles and dairy products. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, as well as Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre and NDP leader Jagmeet Singh released statements on social media rebuking Trump. Trump also mentioned taking back the Panama Canal as well as acquiring Greenland, a territory of Denmark.

– Winds continued to spread wildfires in the Los Angeles area as a third blaze in the nearby San Fernando Valley developed overnight on Tuesday. The three fires were zero per cent contained earlier today and firefighting aircraft are unable to be used due to winds reaching 112 kilometres per hour and 160 km/h in the mountains and foothills. California has deployed more than 1,400 firefighters to take on the inferno, while the Los Angeles Fire Department put the call out to off-duty firefighters.

– Former MP and businessman Frank Baylis announced his candidacy for the Liberal Party leadership on Tuesday, the first since Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced his resignation on Monday. Baylis, who is now the executive chairman of the board for Baylis Medical Technologies, believes his experience in the business world can appeal to a lot of Canadians. He also said cutting the carbon tax will not solve Canada’s affordability crisis, but rather adding “good jobs” and increasing productivity.
