  • Representatives from the United States and China will meet in Switzerland this weekend to discuss trade. Optimism the talks could lead to easing tariffs underpinned grain and oilseed markets on Friday.
  • Hot and dry weather in China has hurt wheat crops, and the country has reportedly increased purchases of Canadian and Australian wheat to compensate for the smaller production.
  • Canada’s unemployment rate edged up 0.2 points in April, hitting 6.9 per cent, reported Statistics Canada. U.S. tariffs were said to be partially to blame for the increase.
  • Robert Francis Prevost, 69, was chosen as the next pope on Thursday, taking the name Pope Leo XIV. Born in Chicago, he is the first from the U.S. to become leader of the Catholic Church. Prevost also holds Peruvian citizenship.
