- The annual rate of inflation in the United States dipped slightly in January, coming in at 6.4 per cent compared to 6.5 per cent in December, according to the country’s latest report on consumer prices. The inflation data marked the seventh straight year-over-year slowdown but is still well above the Federal Reserve’s 2.0 per cent annual target.
- Nikki Haley, the former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, has announced that she will run for president in 2024. Haley becomes the second Republican after former President Donald Trump to announce a presidential bid.
- New Zealand has declared a national state of emergency after Cyclone Gabrielle battered the northern part of the country. Widespread flooding, road closures and power outages were reported.
