Global Markets: U.S. midterm elections take place

WINNIPEG – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

– Americans will take to the polls today for midterm elections, in which all 435 seats on the House of Representatives as well as 35 Senate seats and 36 races for state governor will be determined. Projections indicate that the Republicans are poised to take control of both the House and the Senate, providing even more resistance to the agenda of Democrats and President Joe Biden. Rising inflation, women’s reproductive rights and the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the United States Capitol have been three major issues on the campaign trail.

– Education workers in Ontario represented by the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) went back to work today, one day after Ontario Premier Doug Ford said his government would repeal anti-strike legislation. CUPE, which represents 55,000 education workers in Ontario, will resume negotiations with the government over a new contract. Public schools across Ontario were closed for two days during the work stoppage.

– Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky renewed calls for peace talks with Russia on Monday, asking the international community to force the country into doing so. Zelensky also listed conditions for dialogue: the return of all of Ukraine’s occupied lands, compensation for damage caused by the war and the prosecution of war crimes. Zelensky had recently refused to negotiate with Russian President Vladimir Putin, citing proposals being met with “crazy Russian responses with new terrorist attacks, shelling or blackmail.”
