WINNIPEG, Aug. 8 – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

– The United States Senate passed a wide-ranging bill on Sunday covering climate change, health care and corporate taxes. The Inflation Reduction Act now moves to the Democrat-controlled House of Representatives after the narrow 51-50 vote in the Senate saw Vice President Kamala Harris cast the tiebreaking vote.

– China was conducting more military drills around Taiwan on Monday, a day after exercises in the region had been slated to end. The tensions between Taiwan and mainland China escalated over the past week after a diplomatic visit from U.S. House of Representative Speaker Nancy Pelosi to the disputed island territory.

– A truce between Israel and the Gaza Strip-based Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) brokered by Egypt was holding on Monday after violence broke out in the region over the past few days. Israeli attacks on Gaza have reportedly killed at least 44 people, including 15 children.
