Global Markets: Ukraine in the dark

WINNIPEG, Nov. 25 – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

• New satellite imagery released by NASA show the extent of the damage done to Ukraine’s electrical grid, with most of the war-torn country in darkness compared to its neighbours. While Russia claims the attacks on infrastructure are legitimate military targets, Ukraine has accused Moscow of war crimes.

• On Friday, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will appear before the committee investigating the government’s use of the Emergencies Act to quell protests last winter. Trudeau’s appearance will wrap up the public hearing phase of the investigation after the committee has heard from dozens of witnesses over the past six weeks.

• Twitter will reportedly roll out a new verified service next week Friday, including different coloured check marks for individuals, businesses, and governments. Elon Musk announced the plan via tweet, as the social media company struggles to regain its footing after his recent takeover.
