WINNIPEG, Feb. 28 (MarketsFarm) – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

– Delegations from Ukraine and Russia are scheduled to meet in Belarus on Monday for negotiations, as Russian forces converge on Ukraine’s capital city of Kyiv. President Volodymyr Zelensky stated Ukraine is seeking a ceasefire and a withdrawal of Russian forces from the country. Hopes for a settlement in the five-day war are believed to be extremely slim, with reports indicating that Belarus is preparing to enter the conflict with its Russian ally. Over the weekend, in response to growing economic pressure on Russia from the United States, Europe and several other countries, President Vladimir Putin put Russian nuclear forces on high alert.

– A report released on Monday by the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) says many of the impacts of global warming are now irreversible. However, if the world temperature can be kept from increasing by more than 1.5 degrees Celsius, the IPCC said some of the more catastrophic effects could be averted. The report stated that extreme weather events, such as floods, droughts, heatwaves, and storms are more severe. The IPCC estimated that at least one billion people living along coastal areas are in danger of rising sea levels.

– Another of the three leaders of the self-proclaimed Freedom Convoy remains in jail after being denied bail on Friday. An Ontario justice of the peace ruled there’s a “substantial likelihood” Pat King would reoffend. The Alberta resident was arrested on Feb. 18. Tamara Lich, another key convoy organizer also remains in jail, under the same circumstances as King, while Chris Barber was previously released.
