WINNIPEG – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.
– Ukraine’s interior minister Denys Monastyrski, along with 16 others, were killed after a helicopter crashed near Kyiv on Wednesday, becoming Ukraine’s most senior official to die since the start of Russia’s invasion of the country. Ukraine’s State Emergency Service said there were 17 fatalities, including four children on the ground. Monastyrskyi’s deputy Yevhen Yenin and State Secretary of the Ministry of Internal Affairs Yurii Lubkovych were also among those killed, according to the chief of Ukraine’s National Police. It has not yet been determined if the crash was an accident or caused by an act of war.

– BMO Financial Group said on Wednesday it has received all regulatory approvals to complete a US$16.3 billion agreement to buy California-based Bank of The West from BNP Paribas. The deal, which will include the acquisition of 9,300 employees and 1.8 million customers, is expected to close on Feb. 1 subject to conditions.
– Hudson’s Bay announced on Wednesday that the retailer plans to open 25 stores under its revived Zellers brand in seven Canadian provinces along with a new e-commerce site this spring. The locations will be placed inside existing Hudson’s Bay stores and measure between 8,000 and 10,000 square feet. There will be nine locations in Ontario, five in Quebec, four in British Columbia, two in Nova Scotia, and one each in Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Calgary, Edmonton and Medicine Hat, Alta.
