Global Markets: UN chief visits Ukraine

WINNIPEG – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

– United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in the Ukrainian city of Lviv on Thursday. They will discuss solutions to the war, address global food supplies and the risk of disaster at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, now controlled by Russian forces. Earlier in the day, Russian forces shelled Kharkiv, killing seven people and injuring 16 in a residential neighbourhood, according to the Ukrainian Emergencies Service. Pre-dawn shelling also killed one and injured 18 in another residential area.

– A bombing at a Kabul mosque killed at least 21 people and injured at least 33 on Thursday, according to eyewitnesses and police. No group has claimed responsibility yet, but Islamic State extremists bombed another mosque in the city last week, killing a prominent Taliban cleric.

– The Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) reported on Thursday that its survey showed 10 per cent of Canada’s small business owners would file for bankruptcy if their business was no longer solvent and 46 per cent of business owners said they would close their doors. CFIB also said that more than one out of six business owners are currently considering shutting down.

– Researchers at the University of British Columbia (UBC) and the University of Pittsburgh believe they have found a “weak spot” for numerous COVID-19 variants, which they believe will improve treatment options for those infected with the virus. They believe they have identified a “master key” antibody fragment which can neutralize the Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, Kappa, Epsilon and Omicron variants.
