Global Markets: Unifor, Ford ratify new deal

WINNIPEG – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

– Members of Unifor voted 54 per cent in favour of ratifying a new three-year agreement with Ford Motor Company on Sunday, which the union called the “largest negotiated general wage increase in Unifor and Canadian Auto Workers (CAW) history.” The agreement will affect 5,600 workers in Canada, including 1,722 in Windsor, Ont. Unifor and Ford reached a tentative agreement on Sept. 19. Upon signing, members will receive a 10 per cent wage increase in year one of the deal, two per cent in year two, and three per cent in the third year. These increases will be even higher for skilled trades. Workers will see a base hourly wage increase of nearly 20 per cent for production and 25 per cent for trades over lifetime of agreement. Full-time employees are also in line to receive a C$10,000 signing bonus, with C$4,000 for part-time employees.

– Russia used drones and missiles to attack infrastructure, a grain silo and an abandoned hotel near the Ukrainian port city of Odesa on Monday, injuring one person. Ukraine’s air force reported downing all Russian drones overnight, but three air missiles broke through air defences. Russian forces also dropped bombs and launched artillery attacks on the southern Ukrainian region of Kherson, killing three people. In addition, two others also died from Russian attacks in the Donetsk region.

– Speaker of the Canadian House of Commons Anthony Rota apologized on Sunday, two days after a 98-year-old former Ukrainian soldier honoured by parliamentarians was discovered to have served with a Nazi regiment in the Second World War. Yaroslav Hunka was introduced by Rota as a “Ukrainian hero and a Canadian hero” and given a standing ovation during Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s visit to the House of Commons on Friday. Rota said that he takes “full responsibility for his actions”, adding that no parliamentarians or members of the Ukrainian delegation were aware of Hunka’s affiliation.
