Global markets: US jobless claims down, previous week revised up

WINNIPEG, June 9 – The following is a glance at the news moving markets globally.

US JOBLESS CLAIMS MOVE LOWER
US jobless claims in the week ended June 4 dropped 4,000 to a seasonally adjusted 264,000, according to data from the country’s labour department.

However, claims for the previous week were upwardly revised by 1,000.

CANADIAN PRODUCTION CAPACITY GAINS IN FIRST QUARTER
Canadian industries operated at 81.4 per cent of their production capacity in the first quarter, up from 80.9 per cent in the previous quarter, Statistics Canada said in a report on Thursday.

The mining, quarrying, and oil and gas extraction industries were the main source of this increase.

CANADIAN NEW HOUSING PRICES MOVE UP IN APRIL
The new housing price index rose 0.3 per cent in April, following a 0.2 per cent increase in March. This was the largest monthly advance since October and was mainly driven by new housing prices in Ontario, Statistics Canada said in a report on Thursday.

According to StatsCan, of the metropolitan areas covered by the index, the top contributor to the national increase in April was the combined region of Toronto and Oshawa, up 0.7 per cent. Builders cited market conditions as the main reason for the advance.
