Global markets: US producer prices higher

WINNIPEG, February 14 – The following is a glance at the news moving markets globally.

– US producer prices surpassed analyst expectations last month, tracking the largest gains in four years.

The American producer price index increased 0.6 per cent in January, after a 0.2 per cent increase in December, the country’s labour department said on Tuesday.

– The Non-residential Building Construction Price Index (NRBCPI) was up 0.6 per cent in the fourth quarter compared with the previous quarter. This was the fifth consecutive quarterly increase and the largest gain since the second quarter of 2014, Statistics Canada said in a report on Tuesday.

Non-residential construction makes up part of the construction spending data, which can indicate long-term trends.

– The Apartment Building Construction Price Index (ABCPI) rose 0.9 per cent in the fourth quarter compared with the previous quarter. This was the fifth consecutive increase and the largest gain since the third quarter of 2011, Statistics Canada said in a report on Tuesday.
