Global Markets: WestJet, pilots reach agreement

WINNIPEG – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

– Hours before the start of the Victoria Day weekend, WestJet and its pilots union came to a deal in principle on Thursday night, averting a strike which was supposed to start early Friday morning. WestJet chief executive officer Alexis von Hoensbroech said the agreement provides “meaningful improvements” to job security, working conditions and wages. The carrier already cancelled 107 flights originally scheduled for Friday.

– The Group of Seven (G7) bloc of nations, which includes Canada and the United States, have announced new sanctions and export controls against individuals and companies supporting Russia at the G7 summit in Hiroshima, Japan on Friday. Canada will target 17 people and 18 companies providing military support to Russia, with another 30 people sanctioned on human rights violations. The United Kingdom will also ban the import of Russian diamonds. On the same day, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed he will attend the summit on Sunday. The U.S. has also let its European allies know it will allow them to export F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine.

– United Conservative Party leader Danielle Smith faced off with former premier and current Alberta New Democratic Party leader Rachel Notley in the only televised leaders’ debate on Thursday before Alberta’s provincial election on May 29. Both leaders discussed health care, energy, the economy and questioned each other’s suitability for the position. Earlier in the day, Alberta ethics commissioner Marguerite Trussler found Smith in violation of the province’s Conflict of Interest Act when she discussed the criminal case of pastor and activist with Justice Minister Tyler Shandro. However, no sanctions were ordered against her.
