– Nearly 200 cases of monkeypox have been confirmed in more than 20 countries that are not usually known to have outbreaks of the disease endemic to West Africa, according to a report from the World Health Organization. The WHO noted that past outbreaks of the virus have been containable and proposed creating a stockpile of vaccines and drugs to deal with the latest epidemic. Monkeypox does not spread easily, typically needing skin-to-skin contact for transmission. Smallpox vaccines are estimated to be 85 per cent effective against the virus.

– Canada’s national men’s soccer team has withdrawn from a friendly match with Iran that was scheduled for June 5. The match was organized as a warmup ahead of the World Cup, but pressure from the Canadian government and families of the people killed when a passenger jet was shot down in Tehran in 2020 led to the cancellation. The Iranian Football Federation has said it will sue Canada Soccer for $10 million due to breach of contract.
