- Winter storms were causing problems across the United States, with a blizzard warning in Southern California for the first time in decades, interstate closures in Arizona and Wyoming, and thousands of flights cancelled or delayed. Schools and offices were shuttered throughout the northern U.S., with heavy snow moving from the Dakotas across to the East Coast. Meanwhile, record high temperatures were being reported in parts of the Southeast, Mid-Atlantic and Midwest.

- Tensions mounted between Israel and Palestinian militants on Thursday after a gunbattle on Wednesday left 10 Palestinians dead and wounded dozens more.
