Domestic consumption of beef in Japan has been stagnant. Inflationary pressure and declining household income are forcing consumers to be more price-conscious and shifted some demand to less expensive products such as pork or chicken. According to a household survey by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, per capita beef consumption was 164 grams in July. In contrast, pork consumption was 3.7 times higher at 609 grams, and chicken consumption was 2.9 times higher at 469 grams. Furthermore, high import prices and a weakened yen have negatively impacted Japan’s import demand for beef. According to the Japan’s Ministry of Finance, total beef imports from June to August 2023 saw a 22 per cent decline compared to a year ago.
