In early July, the Beef Improvement Federation held their 55th Annual Research Symposium and Convention in Calgary, Alta. The last time it was held in Canada was back in 2008 and this year, 356 attendees came from Canada, U.S., Australia, New Zealand, Austria, Northern Ireland, Finland and the UK. The organizing committee had their work cut out for them, but members Kajal Devani, Hal Nixdorf, Lynsay Beaver, Dawn Trautman and John Crowley did a great job with help from Sandy Russell over at the Canadian Beef Breeds Council. They not only organized a very informative conference but also pre- and post-convention tours to top cattle ranches and feedlots.
Many awards were presented and Canadian producers were well represented. David Bolduc of Cudlobe Angus, Stavely, Alta. was awarded the 2023 Pioneer Award. The 2023 Beef Improvement Federation Continuing Service Award went to Bruce Holmquist, Spruce Grove Cattle Co., Kinistino, Sask. and Sean McGrath of Round Rock Ranch, Vermillion, Alta. The 2023 Beef Improvement Federation Commercial Producer of the Year was Douglas Lake Cattle Co. of Douglas Lake, B.C., and the 2023 Beef Improvement Federation Seedstock Producer of the Year went to 44 Farms, Cameron, Texas.
Next year’s conference will be held in Knoxville, Tennessee.
