Canadian Simmental Association recognizes breeders

In 2017, the Canadian Simmental Association established the Award of Excellence program to showcase and recognize breeders who exhibit registered Simmental seed stock across Canada each year. We are once again pleased to announce this year’s top five Award of Excellence females and bulls. 

The 2023 Canadian Simmental Association Award of Excellence Female was GVR Miss Peppa 21J, owned by Black Gold Simmentals of Lloydminster, Sask., exhibited at Olds Fall Classic, Lloydminster Stockade Round-up, Farmfair International and Canadian Western Agribition for a total of 147 points. 

The second-place female was GG State of Elegance 16K, owned by Ty-D Livestock and Darlene Scirber of Streamstown, Alta., with a total of 121 points. Third was Barlee Hearts on Fire 05H, owned by Jerry Barber of Shawville, Que., with a total of 99 points. Fusion Living This Dream, owned by Fusion Livestock and Double RN Ranch- ing of Metcalfe, Ont., took fourth with a total of 96 points. Rounding out the top five was Black Gold Ms Hayleigh 153K, owned by Bar SK Cattle Co. Ltd./Kehler Eaton of Lloydminster, Sask., with a total of 89 points.

The 2023 Canadian Simmental Association Award of Excellence Bull was Mader Big Energy 97J, owned by Bohrson Marketing and Mav Farms of Olds, Alta., exhibited at Olds Fall Classic, Farmfair International, and Canadian Western Agribition for a total of 102 points. 

Hot on his heels in second was WF Capital 164L, owned by Wallgren Farms of Edgerton, Alta., with a total of 100 points. Third was DK Kingsland 9L, owned by DK Land and Cattle Corp. of Lampman, Sask., with a total of 79 points. In fourth was Ty-D’s Man O War 71L, owned by Ty-D Livestock of Steamstown, Alta., with a total of 74 points. And closing out the top five was Paw Juan Pablo 121J, owned by Wheatland Simmental Stock Farm of Bienfait, Sask., with a total of 70 points. 

At Agribition, the Grand Champion percentage Simmental female was Erixon Darlin 2.0 from Indian River Cattle Co. at Indian River, Ont. The top percentage bull was Ultra/Hval Creed 152L exhibited by Ultra Livestock of Carstairs, Alta., and Hay Valley Ranches. The Grand Champion purebred bull was WF Capital 164L from Wallgren Farms of Edgerton, Alta.
