Rick Wright from the Livestock Markets Association of Canada formed a strong bond with the late Larry Sweitzer over the years. He recently wrote to us about Sweitzer, who passed away last December.

Larry Schweitzer grew up and went to school in Hamiota, Man., and stayed around the area to spend his whole life in the cattle industry. Schweitzer was a cow-calf operator and a grain farmer. He started as a cattle buyer for Cattlex in Hamiota and covered many auction sales.

Schweitzer was one of the original partners who formed Hamiota Feedlot Ltd. and built the feedlot from scratch. Over the years he bought out the other partners and operated the feedlot with his partner, Audrey. Schweitzer always had a passion for improving the cattle industry and that led him to cowboy politics. During his life he was president of the Manitoba Cattle Producers Association and the National Cattle Feeders Association. He was a member of the Manitoba Livestock Marketing Association and the Livestock Markets Association of Canada. He was active in the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association, as it was known then. Schweitzer volunteered countless hours in the promotion of the cattle industry. He was respected by his peers and government and was often asked to sit on committees across the country representing the feedlot sector.
