Winnipeg, Nov. 28 (CNS) – Farmers in Prince Edward Island
have been diversifying their operations over the last five
years, according to the P.E.I. Federation of Agriculture. For
decades, people have viewed P.E.I. as a potato only province and
while potatoes may still be king, soybeans, lentils, peas and
blueberries are gaining ground and becoming regular crops in
rotation.
Following a drop in price after the announcement of India
imposing a 50 per cent tariff on pea imports earlier this month,
yellow peas increased slightly in price over the last day in
Western Canada, according to Prairie Ag Hotwire. Yellow pea
prices rose 15 cents to C$1.25 per bushel, however over the last
month prices have dropped $1.25 and $1.80 over the last year.
Eston #1 lentils as well have gained in price, according to
the Prairie Ag Hotwire. Over the last day they rose one cent to
25 cents per pound.
