Pulses: U.S. dry bean exports to Latin America rising

Winnipeg, November 23 (CNS) – Exports of dry beans from the U.S. to Costa Rica are at a record level. According to a report by the Northarvest Bean Growers Association, just under 10,000 tonnes have been shipped to the central American country so far in 2017/18. Black beans make up 90 percent of the shipments. U.S. dry bean exports to Chile were also up, hitting 1,900 tonnes. Pinto beans, black beans and great northern beans comprised the vast majority of the shipments.
Dry bean production in Brazil hit 3.4 million tonnes in 2016/17. That’s down 23 percent from the year previous. Around 2.2 million tonnes of the production comprised carioca (pinto) beans, over half a million tonnes were black beans and 700,000 were cowpeas.

Yellow pea prices in Western Canada fell 10 cents during the past week and are now listed at C$5.00 to C$6.60 a bushel, according to the latest information from the Prairie Ag Hotwire.
Laird #1 lentils were hanging steady at 31 to 36 cents a pound, according to the Hotwire.
Desi #1 chickpeas fell two cents and are currently going for 27 to 28 cents per pound.
Bids for navy beans were hanging steady at 25.5 cents a pound.
