Congratulations to Cassidy Serhienko, who was one of 11 Canadian recipients of the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship, which will allow her to pursue a graduate degree in English literature at the University of Oxford in England, where she’ll focus on contemporary feminist writing.
Serhienko hails from Maymont, Sask., where her family operates a purebred Charolais farm, known as Serhienko Cattle Co. Serhienko told CBC News that the values she learned growing up on the farm and showing cattle through 4-H helped her win the scholarship. In fact, shortly after finding out she’d won the scholarship, Serhienko and her family were off to Canadian Western Agribition.
Serhienko recently completed her bachelor of education degree from the University of Saskatchewan, and is currently completing a bachelor of arts (honours) degree in English. She’s served as a peer mentor in the College of Education, and recently has helped transcribe Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales from original manuscripts, as part of Dr. Peter Robinson’s research team.
