‘Even after the railway came out, outlying settlements still had to depend on a mail carrier with an elastic schedule, a horse and wagon and unlimited time. One of these men said he became personally acquainted with every gopher beside the trail. Railway construction days were colorful with their motley camp crews, Indian resentment, natural hazards and occasional mutinous complaints. But the immense task was completed with little blood letting and even the Indians soon adjusted themselves to the change. And it was a big change.’
