Global Markets: Financial sector to support green initiatives

WINNIPEG – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

– United Nations special envoy on climate action and finance Mark Carney announced on Wednesday that more than 450 financial firms, including Canada’s five big banks, have committed to supporting the goals of the Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero (GFANZ). To enter into the agreement, firms must promise to abide by 24 financial initiatives to signal that they are making green initiatives a priority. Carney, a former governor of the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England, said these firms total US$130 trillion in resources while his task was to find US$100 trillion to fund a worldwide transition from fossil fuels to green energy.

– The United States Centers for Disease Control (CDC) delivered its approval to Pfizer-BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccination for children ages five to 11 on Tuesday. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration had already authorized the shots but the CDC formally recommends who should receive the vaccine. The pint-sized shot is currently under review by Health Canada and once approved, 2.9 million doses will be available.

– Poland’s foreign ministry has summoned its Belarussian diplomat on Wednesday after three uniformed people with long guns entered Polish territory from Belarus on Monday night. The incident occurred 300 metres from the Poland/Belarus border. In recent months, migrants from Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan and Africa were lured to Belarus with tourist visas and encouraged to cross into Poland, Lithuania and Latvia – all of whom are in the European Union. EU leaders believe this is an attempt by Belarussian president Alexander Lukashenko to create instability in the region.
