Global Markets: U.S. introduces new test measure for air travellers

WINNIPEG – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

– The White House announced on Wednesday that air travellers flying into the United States now have to get a COVID-19 test no earlier than the day before their departure in the latest measure to combat the Omicron COVID-19 variant. The new plan will be implemented early next week with no specific date given. Currently, travellers have a 72-hour window. Meanwhile, Canadian Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos said to reporters on Wednesday that on-arrival testing for all foreign air travellers from outside the U.S. could come into effect at any time.

– Representatives from both the U.S. and Russian governments exchanged words on Wednesday as Russian troops continue to build up on its border with Ukraine. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov at their meeting in Stockholm on Thursday that “if Russia decides to pursue confrontation, there will be serious consequences,” adding that “the best way to avert a crisis is through diplomacy.” Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said that it was Ukrainian authorities who were “aggressive” and “provocative”, adding that “Ukrainian leadership doesn’t exclude a forceful scenario.”

– Two more major Canadian banks announced they will raise their quarterly dividends on Thursday. The TD Bank Group will raise their’s 13 per cent and seek to repurchase up to 50 million of its shares. Meanwhile, Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC) is increasing its dividend by 8.8 per cent and has announced plans to repurchase up to 10 million shares.

– Federated Co-operatives Limited (FCL) announced on Tuesday it has reached an agreement with Cenovus Energy to purchase 181 Husky fuel sites on behalf of local co-operatives for C$264 million. FCL said on Tuesday the acquisition, its largest in history, will increase the presence of the Co-op brand and puts FCL in a position to transition to a low-carbon economy.
