Global Markets: Biden, Putin set for call over Ukraine

WINNIPEG – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

– United States President Joe Biden and Russian President Vladimir Putin will hold a video conference call on Tuesday, which many expect Biden will attempt to dissuade Putin from a possible invasion of Ukraine. Tens of thousands of Russian troops are currently amassed along the Ukrainian border. Biden’s team has already created a set of economic penalties should Russia go forward with an invasion. The U.S. president consulted with European allies on Monday to discuss plans for sanctions.

– A plant-based COVID-19 vaccine created by Quebec City-based biopharmaceutical company Medicago, with British-American vaccine giant GlaxoSmithKline, has reported high efficacy in Phase 3 trials on Tuesday. Both companies will now prepare to submit their findings to Health Canada for final approval. The vaccine was 71 per cent effective against all COVID-19 variants and 75 per cent effective against the Delta variant. It would be the first plant-based vaccine and first one using virus-like particle technology to be approved for human use.

– Merck Canada announced on Monday it is partnering with Thermo Fisher Scientific to manufacture its COVID-19 antiviral drug in Canada for global distribution. The Thermo Fisher facility in Whitby, Ont. will produce the drug for use in Canada, the United Kingdom, the European Union, as well as the Asia-Pacific and Latin America regions. The location will be one of three in the world to produce the drug.
