Global Markets: NHL postpones games, but season still on

WINNIPEG, Dec. 20 (MarketsFarm) – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

– The NHL and NHL Players Association have reached an agreement to continue the regular season schedule, despite a number of COVID-19 related postponements. All cross-border games will also be delayed through Dec. 23 due to concerns over shifting travel restrictions heading into the holidays. The participation of NHL players in the upcoming Olympics in Beijing remains in question. A number of NBA and NFL games were also postponed over the weekend as the Omicron variant sweeps through the professional sports leagues.

– Over 200 people have been confirmed dead with dozens still missing after Typhoon Rai struck the Philippines last week, officials in the country confirmed Monday. Relief operations are underway, but have been hampered by the damaged infrastructure.

– Booster shots of Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine appear to be protective against the Omicron variant in laboratory testing, the company announced Monday. A 50 microgram booster increased neutralizing antibodies against the variant by 37 times.
